Underglow for Bit Char-G

I was wondering, is it possible to put underglow (street glow, etc) on the Bit Char-G's? I don't see any mods or posts about that. It might look pretty cool. Thanks.

tinyrc 07-31-2002 11:32 PM

Well, it could easily be accomplished using a standard LED mod but pointing them downwards; another, much cooler way to go would be to use this stuff:

http://beingseen.com

We used this for a Mini-Z and it looked great. It would be harder to adapt to a BC-G, but if you can do it, it would be very cool!

i bet an LED would be easier, but that's just me. also instead of puting it underneath the car, you could put it on both sides of it.:)

TheFanMan 08-01-2002 02:16 PM

you can get that neon wire really small, but the prob with it is that the battery holder for it is way too big. I'll see if I can find that site I had again, they had it really really cheap and extremely thin wire

schoon 08-01-2002 04:50 PM

The glow-sheet-things appear to be too large fot Bit use from what I can figure from the web-page.

Thus, I'd also think that LEDs might be the better way to go. I'd think that one mounted centrally might do the trick.

TheFanMan 08-02-2002 12:09 AM

omg I thought of an idea and almost wet myself... here goes...

1) www.coolneon.com, they have tiny tiny neon wire that is just small enough to fit under a bc-g

2) get a NiMH battery and put that into your bc-g (I just bought one from QFM )

3) coolneon has instructions on how to solder a lead wire so that you can set your own power source

4) here's the tricky part: connect the NiMH battery to the neon, and then loop, and glue (or however you can attach it so as not to move around while trying to drive) the neon around the front top, and down the sides then right over and b4 the motor plate.

The NiMH has enough power for a gigantic charge, enough to run wire that size for aslong as a normal bc-g will run. AND BAM! neon on your bc-g. I know you guys would rather use LED's but this will look so much better. oh.... and your car may need extra paint so that the light doesn't leak thru:D

TFM - yes! This is what I was trying to convey. You have to try this, it would be so cool!!!

ViperKid 08-02-2002 01:54 PM

where is Wedginater? we can't have a "light" conversation without him!:D

Hacked it up

Well I hacked up an underglow, but it doesn't quite work the way I want it too. I think I'll just give up and go with headlights and tail lights. BTW for anyone else trying, I tried to put a battery holder in, but there wasn't enough room. Too bad since the battery holder made it a lot easier to keep pressure on the battery.

heh i tried to put tireflys IN my car...damn batteries wouldnt fit...woulda been kool though...

Regarding using EL wire, EL wire uses a low-voltage AC power source, thus an inverter of sorts is required. for larger - 1/20 - 1/10 models this is feasable, but on bitchar-g the electronics alone are commonly much larger than the reciever board... you could make your own, but the effect might be much better achieved by using el sheeting (also known as indiglo) from a dead watch and the inverter pulled from the watch. If you're using LED and are experiencing bright pinpointed light, try shining the light up into the body cavity and reflecting it downwards, or roughen the lens on the led with some sandpaper.

Wow defor that's a brilliant idea! Someone try this quick! Oh, and welcome to the Forums defor!

rmyc 10-17-2002 11:00 PM

talking bout ELs.....you could get a ~1.25"x1.25 " for about $2
by braking up a soft touch night light/indiglo( from k-mart etc.) and using the EL pad from inside
..only thing is that you have to by a 110vac inverter from an electronic store ..like allelectronics.com

it could be cut to any size/shape and installed under the car

nice

The Neon wire from coolneon.com is DC powered by a battery. They don't have any inverters anywhere; there's simply a soldered connection, a plastic connector for easy removal/swap, and then it goes straight to a 9volt battery in their applications.

I don't know much about fiber optics but I believe that it is possible because these fiber optic strands are small enough to line up a bunch of them in the sides and the front of the car. I can't wait for QFM's fiber optic headlamp mod tutorial goes up so I can read into this more. I can't seem to find model/hobby articles and tutorials on fiber optics right now.

Try using those tiny little glowsticks that fishermen and ravers use. They're about 1/8" thick and 1" long, and are available in lots of different colors and are just the right size for Bits.

Here's a supplier that sells even smaller 5/8" long glowsticks:

Hey empire82,

Great work! That's the best version of underglow I've seen yet for a Bit! :D

Do your headlights work too? I can't tell from the pic.
Where did you get the LED's?
What are using as a power source?

The el wire stuff wont work first its about 4 ft long and second it needs atleast 2 AA batteries to power it i have my bit char-g set up with an underglow its a white mazda rx-7 with baby blue flames going back from the front wheels along with white rims and a chrome trim white headlights and red tail lights and a blue under glow the only problem i have is getting enuff power i had to raise my chasie a little bit to fit 2 batteries its very hard to do and now to make my car look lowered i had to do alot of work to it to make it look good i put my lights in right behind my suspension it looks good now but it to me forever to do ill try and get pics of it up.

It seems like it would work but glow in the dark paint doesnt have enuff glow with out the help of a black light

I think that might work but i cant find anything with enuff of a reflector im trying to get some rhinestones that are smalling enuff and mix that into the paint for a more reflective quality

JBit 11-04-2002 01:46 AM

when i think of lights from the bottom of a car i think of a row coming from under each doorsill - or the true cheeze neon=surrounding the license plate! now that would be a nice mod!

Ive never seen anything surounding the lisense plate but you might be able to get a light in the lisense plate ive seen swiches there so a light would be about the same thing if anyone has a pic or a link to something like that tell me i want to see it!

RidgeRacer 11-04-2002 11:17 PM

What about tearing apart one of those ultra bright LED keychains and using it for for your head or tail lights, or like someone mentioned before if you put aluminum foil in your bit it shoould reflect the light downward.

I found the keychains to cost about $3 on the web. You would only need one for underglow and they have their own battery. Also for 6 bucks you could have some really bright head lights.

When I get my first car this weekend I'll try it out after I do the antenna mod.:D

JBit 11-05-2002 10:11 PM

Yep, that's a great mod - that row of leds under the doors is exactly what i was talking about! hmm i guess for a license plate mod, lightly scraping away the paint bordering the plate then shining a cheezy orange or purple or green led inside the car directly behind the plate could work...
