Turbo??

Do you have to remove the old fet's when you install the turbo?????

whitenight 10-07-2004 09:25 PM

hello

were you get the turbo? how much? were? plzz write back

moebrown20 10-07-2004 09:45 PM

I picked it up here in nyc from Alan Mok (Alan is the Mini-Z MR-01 Stock, & the Mini-Z MR-02 Kyosho Mini-Z National Champion).
He has a store here. I picked a few up from him for 25 bucks.
I here www.rcmart.com & www.hobbyect.com have them for much cheaper :D

moebrown20 10-07-2004 09:47 PM

I'm sorry, I forgot to tell you that you do not have to remove your stock fet's to use these external turbos!

whitenight 10-08-2004 07:03 PM

ok

thankz but i went to the sites u gave me but i cant find the turbo can u send the exact link that takes me right to the turbo part

moebrown20 10-08-2004 10:43 PM

Sure thing!
http://www.hobbyetc.com/cgi-bin/item.cgi?part_id=7657

I know that it will allow you to use bigger motors such as the Impala (it's what I name my modified motor). What I didn't test is how much voltages it will take. So I cannot recommend you use any more than the 8.4v limit(that the max I know the board could take).

thankz but 2 question is it hard to install? if so can u tell me how and sum pics of ur car wit the turbo in ? thankz

whitenight 10-09-2004 09:31 AM

and this turbo thing does it work on a Xmod??

moebrown20 10-09-2004 11:36 AM

I will show pics as soon as I charge my camera. Yes it does work with xmods. Alot of people do not use them beacuse they take up room (for 5 & 6 cell cars), plus they add on a little more weight. The install time is pretty quick (5 mins) you can have it set up so that you can run stock or modified races (just take it out when you want to run in stock races with out any down time)

whitenight 10-09-2004 01:01 PM

ok thankz so send sum pics wen ur camrea is charged

SHIFT_DRIFT 10-09-2004 04:43 PM

You sure it works?
Most Mini Z turbos are for the MR01 which dosn't support braking.

xxxmod 10-09-2004 05:43 PM

just stack the fets you wont have all that wire and they cost 3.00 each

who fast does ur Xmod go?

SHIFT_DRIFT 10-12-2004 08:25 PM

Where do you hook up the leads of the turbo onto the xmod?
Same way as Mini Z?

I don't know, I don't test my cars in that way. I put them on the street and give it all I got!(It beats my supra which has a 36t, old Impala motor)

Yes it works the same way. As far as I see, both xmods and mini-z's boards are the same(mini-z is more efficent)

Panasonic CGR18650 3.7 Volt 1400-Mah Graphite Lithium-Ion batteries. You can get they from here: http://onlybatteries.com/showitem.asp?ItemID=11142.11
They are too big for stock Xmods, I have mine in a extended (1/24th scale) ford focus.

I just made a plate. Some people use a cd case. If you want, I could build you one. Here's a pic:

Good God...you've created a monster...

moebrown20 11-30-2004 09:54 AM

No, thats not my monster........
I just finished my protype turbo and motor.
With 2 lithium I can reach 82 easy.
And with 3 I don't know............. Did you know that the speed checker maxium is 99. After that it said error.

How does the mini-z turbo hook up? Is that a MR-02 turbo?

No, it's not MR-02 turbo(they have no breaks). I am made my own version (similar to Woah-nelly but larger fets) so I could keep my break-function. I'm pretty much limited to batteries now(need very high MaH).
All of the Mini-Z turbos I have used were installed the same way the instruction describe.

Shelby_HEMI 12-02-2004 11:36 AM

Are you in the monster business or something?

How do the turbos work? Are they just really big capacitors?

RacinSkillZ101 12-02-2004 05:20 PM

hey moebrown what kinda motor are you runin?

The turbo I build works the same way your stock fets' work. I wanted to use it on a track and I needed breaks. (I tried a turbo without breaks on the track, and I melted the solder off of it)

The monster business... lol, no, I just want the fastest Xmod possible. As long as everything fits under the body and its fast, I'm happy. When I'm finished, I will post a picture.

I use several motors:
The stage 4 I use on the track. It tops out at 56-58km.
The Impala I use on a street track (oval or straight-away). The max on that I've seen was 65km but 60 is normal.
This new motor I'm working on Cheetah-X (named after a slot motor that was discontinued) I still get different speeds. One time I get 94 the next I get 86km. I'm looking for 82- 84km on a oval track and mid to high 90's in a drag.

SHIFT_DRIFT 12-03-2004 11:38 PM

I realized that the Xmod has brakes just like the MR02.
The brake function may burn out the Turbo.
What did you use to counteract this?

(or did you just get a MR02/OL Turbo?)

There is 3 parts to the fet(that we need to know now)
1. gate or on & off switch
2. source or power
3. drain (where the power is going to)

I'm not a expert on this, but when breaking with electric motors, the energy gained form breaking goes to the fet on the board & from there back to the batteries. I think that the externals cannot do that which causes the extra energy to "burn-off" as waste. I use the gates from the board itself (like the woah nelly), the only thing I changed was the source. Instead of getting it from the board, I got it straight from the batteries. There is a thread on how to make one in the science section, but here's a pic.

since you have named these motors your self, i take it you made them from other motors. Do you mind telling us which motors you used for a base and what you did to them? Or is that "secret info"?

I can tell you a little info. The st4: the arm is from a st2 the rest is from japan. The Impala: the amr is from mabuch motors, wire from cali and the rest is from carmoworld. The Cheetah-X: the bearings is from carmoworld, endbell can & brushes is from china and the arm is from Mabuch motors. At first the Impala motor was from a 16D slot motor cut down and modified (too much work and time) so I made a few phone calls and made friends with some vendors.
