Fool's Gold........BC Finally Paints A Supra!

1 Attachment(s)
I finally got around to painting a Supra. This one was done with rattle cans again, using four colors to give it a very subtle fade. I used Tamiya gold-light gunmetal-aluminum, and sprayed a little dark gunmetal over top all colors. Finished it off with Tamiya clear. All details like the headlights, tailights, and side markers were painted by hand.

Trust me when I say that the pics do not do this one justice. The lights and camera kinda wash out the definition of the different colors. You have to see this one in person to really appreciate it. By far my favorite ride in my stable.

Hope you like!

turbopimp187 12-23-2003 09:22 PM

good job, i was thinking about doing a supra with similar paint, but a little bit brighter, with orange flakes that shine through, like the supra in 2fast2furious. by the way, how many xmods&mini z's do u own?

if someone could paint this color, i'd pay them money!

Bad Company 12-23-2003 09:44 PM

Ummm, are you trying to say I photo shoped mine?

neurokinetik 12-23-2003 09:48 PM

In the pics it's pretty subtle. I think I would go with black wheels with silver lip all the way around though. I'm not big on seeing different colored wheels on the front and back, even if they do match the car.

(Sidenote, the Mugen NSX body has wheels that are different colored. If I bought that body, I'd have to paint the wheels all the same color, because it bugs me too much. )

Bad Company 12-23-2003 09:54 PM

Yeah, I will agrre with you on the different color wheels, I'm not a big fan either. I only did it here to help bring out the color change from front to rear. I like you idea, and may have to paint some new wheels.

lemans23 12-23-2003 09:57 PM

how would u get that idea? i just asked if u liked the cars new fade!

Bad Company 12-23-2003 10:00 PM

Oh ok. Sorry. I actually tried to paint one of my first Supras with the blue-green Kamelion Kolor before, but when I pulled the masking off, it pulled the paint off around the edges. I think it was due to having oils on my hands when handling the body.

I have painted a car that pink color, just not as a fade. It was a convertable Firebird Zip.

lemans23 12-23-2003 10:10 PM

thats pretty tight. i drive full size rc cars at my local track, and i own an airbrush so i can paint tight bodies. i've got a tight paasche 2x action. if anyone wants to learn how to airbrush, this is the one to get. it is incredible. the link is HERE . it's great. its kinda confusin at first, at least it was for me, but now i paint bodies for people at the track. u can make some serious dinero painting cars for people! if anyone wants a rc car painted, gimme the style, ur email address and we can work it out! u just need to send me the cash and ur phone num and u can get a pimped out bodies!

Bad Company 12-23-2003 10:16 PM

I used to have an airbrush whe nI worked on models, but it is long gone. I will eventually get another when, since I am getting into bigger RC's now with the clear bodies. I would like to turn out some nice custom work.

TypeZer0 12-23-2003 10:17 PM

wow, that's a very nice paint job! i like how in the pic the change is subtle yet still noticeable. only wish cameras would capture the image the way you would expect it to. how do you fade the colors? do you airbrush the rear one color, move towards the middle with another color, and finish the front wiht the last color and allowing each airbrush stroke to overlap a bit to create that fading effect?

lemans23 12-23-2003 10:20 PM

first, u have to mask is right. next, you paint a full layer, pull up a little tape, paint another layer with more air than paint, go to bed, wake up, paint the second color and stuff like that. a little hard when u start. a good way to practice is to drink a 2 liter of soda, cut it in half and u have 2 pieces to practice on! i also have a book of fades. u can buy them online at craft places and stuff.

Bad Company 12-23-2003 10:22 PM

No airbrush here, it was done with ratlle cans. Basically, I painted the whole car the light gunmetal color first. Then I held a can of gold at such an angle and distance to only get the front. As I moved towards the back, I pulled the can further away. Then I did the same with the aluminum only going towards the front from the rear. I would go back with the light gunmetal and even it out using the same techique of pulling farther away as I go further into the next color. Finally, I lightly sprayed dark gunmetal across the entire body to pull it all together.

maikeru 12-23-2003 11:40 PM

you post the best custom X's ever i love you! J/k, keep up the good work and i think the fade is one of the best i have ever seen, i say super clean.

Thanks arch2b! I'm still willing to do some work for ya if you like. I looked at the sketches, and would like to attempt some of them. Maybe once RS releases the replacement bodies, I'll obtain a few, try it, and send ya one.

don't be silly, when the bodies come out, i'll send you the money to buy one and whatever materials needed. your skills are very good and well worth the cost.

Cool, we'll work it out. Maybe it can all come together in time to bring them up to Charlottesville next month. I still gotta get my Mini Z stuff together though.

You got it!

I have been reading that post and have been seriously considering picking up two of the wide L shape tracks too, just gotta find the room for it.

Those things are nice.

I'm not necessarily a big fan of 4th gen Supras either, but I think they look way better stock than with the bodykits that are available for the XMods. The one just needs to come with a big dorsal fin and the car will look exactly like a fish.

I do think the big basket handle wing is probably the one stock body piece that I would change, however.

I think a good Supra project that I have net seen done yet would be to remove the fins at the back of the fish-looking body kit, and blend the top of the sideskirts better with the body. They seem too thick to me. The front is OK.
