How to Splice LED's for the Light Kits

1 Attachment(s)
OK, I'm going to be using the left over tail light LED's from past projects, but it all applies the same for the head lights, so here we go...

You will need:

2 Light Kits (Or more)
Scissors (Or knife)
Electrical Tape

Do not do this with the light kits hooked up. (Duh!)

First, cut and remove the LED's from your second Light Kit. I suggest cutting them close to the board to have enough wire to rtun them wherever you plan in the car. Seperate the wires on each LED, and use the scissors to strip the ends. Be carefull to only cut away the insulation, do not cut into the wire. It helps to twist the strands in each wire together after striping them.

Next, seperate the wires on the light kit you will be installing. Do not seperate them all the way back to the board, this will keep them in the correct pairs (each side).

Next, cut the wires on the light kit you are installing in the middle and strip them just like you did before.

One thing to remember here...

Each pair of wires to each LED have one plain wire and one with a white stripe. You have to match all your wires up when splicing them back together. (Plain to plain, stripe to stripe.)

Now, match the seperated LED's up and twist the plain wires together for two of the LED's. Then twist the striped wires together.

Now take those two LED's, and twist the plain wire to the plain wire going to the board. Do the same for the striped wire.

Now fold your wire over on the insulated part (I usually fold it over on the wire to the board.) and wrap some electrical tape around the exposed wire. Repeat these steps for the other side, and for the headlights.

You are done.

viperkilla 11-01-2003 09:27 AM

Thanks bad company. I am definitately try this when I get 2 light kits!

Nii 11-01-2003 01:24 PM

So if i wanted to splice in a third or fourth set i just do the same thing but and that third or fourth set?

Nii 11-01-2003 01:25 PM

Nevermind, I understand now

arch2b 11-01-2003 03:28 PM

very nice tutorial! your quite the modder;) i'm a sucker for light kits and the general rule of thumb for me is, the more lights the better:D

dEmOnRaCeR 11-01-2003 05:47 PM

very nice but does it use the batterries faster or no difference

TypeZer0 11-01-2003 08:26 PM

a about 20 mA (typical of many led's of this size) battery life shoudln't be that affected...unless you splice in like 20 led's hehe

Hmm...where could I stick all of those.....:D

Strider 11-05-2003 07:31 PM

Get some green ones and stick them all around the inside edge of the bottom of the body.:D

Nii 11-05-2003 08:28 PM

If you buy two light kits, can you splice the tail lights from one kit into the head lights for the other, or will it not work?

By the way, Nice work BC

Bad Company 11-05-2003 08:40 PM

Thank you sir. I don't see why not, the board doesn't care what color LED is on the other end of the wires.

Nii 11-06-2003 03:12 PM

Thanks for the info.:)

does anyone know the exact volts going to the leds? (trying to change the colors) and they are 3mm right?

Benskins 11-12-2003 03:43 PM

has anyone happened to do a fog light mod? if so could you post some pictures please?

VuN86 11-12-2003 09:31 PM

yo bc what is this reflective tape thing u talk about? where can i get some i was thinking over the idea of underglows and came up with an awesome idea

arch2b 11-12-2003 09:45 PM

most 3mm leds are 2.4 volts. the supre brights are typically 3 volts. i would assume they ones you want to use for headlights are 3mm, if they are anythign like mini-z's.

i use 3mm fo rheadlights and 5mm for fog lights

Benskins 11-12-2003 09:50 PM

that looks real nice, im thinkin about just splicing the LEDS from a nother light kit and running more brake lights to the back and running fogs on one of the rice boy bumpers.

ill post some pics next week once i put it together for anyone intersesting in seeing how it turns out.

LEDs

You don't need to buy a whole new light kit. You can buy led seprate at radio shack if want too not sure which is cheaper tho buy if you got wire at home you can get different color leds and splice.

mtnet2000 12-23-2003 08:53 PM

I get my led's from www.superbrightleds.com

njdevsfan2487 04-03-2005 11:03 PM

can i make my own set of wires and LED's instead of buying a whole new kit? If so what type of wire should i use.

gorbasho 06-08-2005 03:25 PM

is the wire with the stripe positive or negative?

p4tch 06-30-2006 05:13 AM

Why
