The course is not built for speed if thats what your wondering Racer9. It does have it's spots where you can get going but as in pure WRC tradition it throws a turn at ya as soon as you hit top speed. At first the track was wide enough for 2 cars to be side by side but I dropped that because you rarely see that in "real" racing.

This is a course for people who like a challenge, no one is going to post great times on it their first time out. In fact most times so far for a complete lap on it have been upwards of 3 minutes!!
Then if your driving it backwards up the hills the batteries are dead after 3 laps around the track. I love it! Thats what a rally course should be I think, HARD!

This was my first ever attempt at this type of project and I am impressed with what I came up with. Total construction time was about 10 hours spread over 3 weeks. Cost? no more than $30, most of that spent on the clay I used.

If theres ever an event in the Philly area I'll bring it along for other people to run on.

So here's my question? What should be my next project? Inspire me people... and again thanks for all the great ideas people gave me during it's construction.

heh, hard track = good track... no zipping around riding the rails with a 3.8 at top speed.... hehe...

since you already made a rally track, (you COULD make tahiti maze from GT3, but that'd be hard)... you could try to make a nice scale Real track... a simpl(er) one to make would be laguna seca... lotsa straights, and a few good corners that NeEd braking... heh, i was thinking of making this , but i chickened out... it'd have to be about the size of my basement to be scale... =(

seeing that skill you have with making tracks, im pretty confident you could pull it off tho... are you familiar with that particular course?

I am very familiar with Laguna Seca. I don't know if I have enough room to do a true scale model for it, but I would love to
incorporate turns 7, 8, and 8A into my next project, which looks like it will be a road course.

For those who play GT3 on the PS2 turns 7 and 8 are on the back end of the course where following a 1/4 mile straight you make a hard left, hit a small downhill, then a equally tough right.
It's a great piece of raceway.

heh either that.. (cuz it's so much fun!) or midfield... the 2 long straights means you can use higher than a 2.6, and a few evil tight corners and sand pits! hehe

Ayte, I have a few questions...

1. Can we get a COMPLETE list of supplies? And Possibly Prices :p...

2. Is there a possibility that you can post procedure? (ex: First, glue the foamboard together, THEN carve it after it dries...)

3. Any expert's advice on makin' this track, like how the cars run on the clay (or whatever you used) and how bad the wear and tear is on the track, oh, and the size. Hmm, and where you got the trees, or whatever you made them out of. And how bout tellin' us how you drive on it, because makin' that second uphill turn looks like you have to drive, then back-up while turning, and turn more... How much tilt they can handle would be good too, and did you end up usin' the baby powder, or makin' a spot where the track tilts?

You are inspiration!!! I wanted to build a track but space was my deciding factor. I originally thought you needed a lot of space. Guess 2x4 would do so I'm off to plan a rally track for myself (go rally!).

Ok, first off the materials list:

1 Package of Styroboard (styrofoam used for insulation) bought at Home Depot: $5

All Purpose craft glue (Brand Name "Tacky Glue") on sale for $1

Utility Knife...$3 preferably with a 4" blade if you can find one.

Crayola Model Magic... about $3 a pack and I used 3 small packs basically. DON'T USE PLAY-DOH, it will crack upon drying and then it looks like crap!

2'-4' piece of 1/4" thick Hard Fiberboard used for the base, $3 @ Home Depot, you can find it a number of sizes. I used this size to save on space.

Assorted Tempera Paints, $1.50 a bottle. Tempera cleans up real nice, it's water based and CHEAP!

Plaster of Paris, got 8lbs. for $5... another good deal, but difficult to work with. If I had to again I would just buy more Clay.

As for the trees? go out to your back yard and grab some twigs, then go to your local Arts and Crafts store and buy this stuff called "DEER MOSS". You can find it where they make floral presentations. Only $2.50 a bag and you'll only need one!! I just wandered upon it, what luck. Also you can buy cheap sponges from a Dollar store and shred them up. and if you want grass just tear the green pad off the sponge and use it.

I will cover the construction procedure and how to run on the thing in my next post, right now I'm back to work!!! LOL
