View Full Version : My car is in stealth mode

Let me start by saying that about a 3 months ago I had an idea to put baby powder on my glass top kitchen table (very thin layer)
I did this so we could have a drift or donut contest (what a blast)
When we were finished I noticed that my chassis and the inside of the body had a thin layer of baby powder dust. So like always, I cleaned everything up. Now ever since that day, my car runs so quiet that you can barely hear it. (stealth mode) I'm not sure if it is the powder residue or what, but I love it. Maybe the baby powder works like a dry lube. This didn't effect the performance at all. Just the noise factor. So I'm pleased with the results, if in fact the quietness was caused by this. Anybody else have a super quiet car? Let me know...

I always clean my cars with a moist Q-tip from top to bottom. This did not screw up my car at all, but was just an un expected side effect that I like. It's no different than running your car outside and getting it a little dusty. The only reason that I didn't do this to the rest of my cars is my cars is that my friggin wife is yelling at me to stop putting baby powder on the table...... lol

That is a bizarre mod! So is it the baby powder inside the body that is deadening the sound, or the baby powder on the drivetrain?

I guess there is a very thin layer on the drivetrain. Baby powder has a weird texture to it, so I'm not exactly sure what happened. What I am sure of, is that my car can now sneak up on a mouse. I'm thinking that the powder got in some places that can't be reached, and are now acting like a lube or something. I could be totally wrong, maybe the car is quiet cause of constant use... Doesn't anybody else have a really quiet car? Maybe mine is a freak or something.

Baby powder is a friction modifier, that's why it's used to prevent diaper rashes, etc.

Please Explain?
Would there be any side effects you can think of to the car? Is there any ball bearing mods for The Bits?

This does not sound like a good idea at all. Think of it this way. If you get some baby powder in between the gears, I think it will definatly slow things down if not stop the car. Especially if you combine a little moisture with the powder, you could have some serious problems.
I may be wrong, but thats my thinking anyway. I wish there was a way to quite down the Zips. They are a little noisy. I do like the sound my Bit makes as it races towards me out of a straight and into a turn. You can almost hear the the tires slide against the floor which is kewl as hell. I'd love to hear that puppy with no gear noise. That would be great!

A friction modifier, in this case, allows to dry surfaces to rub against each other without causing undue friction (and heat). Friction between two moving parts both hinders the movement of both parts and can cause noise. In this case, the tiny granules of baby powder are acting like tiny ball bearings. As a strange side-note, armpit hair is a friction modifier, it keeps you from chafing when your arms move against your body. :)

Not true Joe... It's ment to repell moister....... It's used for babies, and when a baby pees in the diaper it is really wet. If moister and baby powder were a bad combo, they would have a warning against babies not using it..... It really is harmless. If it's safe enough for a baby butt, it's safe enough for your bits gearing...lol
