I guess we are all agreed that these are great little machines BUT the diffs suck BIG TIME.... anyway anyone have any thoughts on substitute diffs (preferably ball) that would with some minor(OR major) surgery maybe be able to fit the spec 2

I was thinking puchi maru or Dynamite RR ( I don't have any of these to gauge possibilty) or maybe you guys have other ones you might suggest... Gert, Nam, Usagi, Anyone lets hear your thoughts.......

On a better note I emailed parts@HLJ some time ago requesting they get some alloy rims and back spring sets and they emailed me back and they added these items to their website. It took about 2 weeks

Now I've asked them to add the faom tyres (two types high and low density) ... so watch that space.... better still send request emails......

perhaps heavy modification on the present diffs, it would be indeed worth a try:D Perhaps a mod to give the seering a "ball" effect. It would be great :D ill also ask for these items from HLJ.

Could you take pictures of the current diff?

I probably won't be getting one of these until January...(tax returns!)...

I bet it wouldn't be too hard to mod the current or drop in a similar one.

Sorry binaryterror no pics at the mo …I fused my diff together cos it was so crap and meshed up... now its direct drive still works but a new spec 2 on the way I’ll post pics then.

Anyway the best way to TOTALLY dismantle the diff AND remove the axle is to GENTLY TEASE the back wheel off (the BLACK one at the NON DIFF end). You need to pull the wheel out in a STRAIGHT LINE i.e DO NOT TWIST AS YOU PULL and make sure you PULL the wheel OUT IN A STRAITGHT LINE . The reason you shouldn't pull AND twist is cos the wheel and axle have grooves running LONGWAYS along the axle and inside the wheel also. These allow the wheel and axle to inter lock and ensure the axle never slips within the wheel.

Another way to do this (safer and easier) is to clip off the little "WHEEL NUT" feature on the black wheel. Do this a bit at a time until you've cliped off enough of the nut to expose the end of the axle... (this will not harm your car in anyway). Then get a small screw driver that is SMALLER IN width than the DIAMETER of the axle. I’ve cut the end cut off my micro screw driver so that the end is effectively squared off allowing for good solid contact with the axle.

Then find something to support the back of black wheel in between the wheel and the rear housing or motor case. (I got my wifes roasting fork ). I placed the roasting fork inbetween the wheel and the motor case unit (which holds the diff and motor etc) with the axle located in between the forks two prongs.

Anyway with the wheel firmly and evenly supported from behind by the fork (or chosen support), PUSH the axle out of the wheel GENTLY using the small diameter screwdriver!!! TAKE YOUR TIME!!!!

Once the wheel is out you should be able to pull the axle out of the rear housing in one piece with the diff intact.

Now to dismantle the diff….

FIRST MAKE SURE YOU WORK IN A CLEAR AREA COS THERE ARE 3 MINUTE GEARS IN THERE AND THEY WILL FALL OUT!!!!! Don’t worry they slot back in no problem when rebuilding.

There’s a little silver cuff peeping out at the DIFF END of the axle. Careful cos its VERY soft alloy and if you squeeze too hard it will clamp harder onto the axle.

You need to get a decent grip on the silver cuff and using the same small screw driver or nearest substitute, push the axle out of the cuff.

DON'T GET BRUTAL WITH IT WHATEVER YOU DO!!!!!!! Be patient and do it gently.

If you want to dismantle the diff ONLY without removing the axle totally, ALL you need to do is TEASE the silver cuff off GENTLY.

I’ll post pics when my new epoch arrives…

DO THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
