View Full Version : Monster Truck!

I've been really inspired by killer's amazing 1/32 monster truck, so I decided to build one for myself!
I wish I had the skills to make such small u-joints as killer does, but I haven't (yet), so I decided to make it 2WD so I don't have to deal with loads of problems.
The gear ratio will also be a lot smallernah, maybe just a little bit smaller. I just realized it will flip over if I attempt to turn at higher speeds :S , so that I can enjoy both offroading and on road racing.
I thought a lot about the suspension. At first I wanted it to have individual suspension for the front tires because I thought it would be easier to make than multilink suspension (which it's really not). Considering the width of the vehicle, individual suspension wouldn't allow the tires to travel very far because the suspension arms would be very short (I could make it wider, but then it would be a stadium truck and not a monster truck). Multilink suspension on the other hand allows massive axle articulation and far greater wheel travel, and not to mention the increased ground clearance (and it looks nice, too!).. So I decided to go with Multilink suspension. :)
At this point, I'm just about done with the front "axle", steering, and the rear axle. So all that is left now is the suspension and the chassis and the radio installation of course.
I'll post some pics/info tonight or tomorrow. :)

can't wait to see pictures of your project man! ;).. hope to see more people here building their own rc project truck.

Pics!!!
Here's the front. I'm going to add a skid plate so it won't get stuck on a rock or something..

And here's another shot. The front axle alone can articulate a bit more than that. Up to ~45 degrees.. :D

Now if this isn't enough articulation.. Then I don't know what is! (The rear axle should be able to articulate more than the pic shows though! )
OOPS! Forgot the pic!!

And yea, you probably guessed it..... The tires are mini-z monster tires (I got me some ball bearings for them!! :) ).
Those nice looking tamiya monster tires are impossible to get here in sweden, unless ofcourse I order them from another country.. but it's such a hassle and it takes time.. The mini-z tires are probably better anyway (I don't like the low profile though, makes them look whimpy.......)

I replaced the aluminum side plates with these.. made everything much easier :). Looks kinda cool, eh?
It has only one 130 sized motor.. so it's kind of weak even though the high gear ratio makes it really slow.. I guess a 280 sized motor will make the weels turn :).
I think I'll get two 3 (or 4!) cell battery packs and place one pack on each side of the chassis.

I'm not quite satisfied with the articulation... Though I highly doubt it'll ever need to articulate more anyway..

Close up on the motor and gears... I know, i know, it looks awful. But at least it makes the thing move! Made, that is.. the stupid worm gear destroyed the little white gear...

A close up on the destroyed gear  . See how the worm gear just shredded the poor little thing??

Very clean construction , what body are going to use? more people like you are what this forum needs

Man that was a quick response!! :D
I haven't decided what body I'm going to use.. but I think it'd be cool with something other than a ford pick up. Maybe something like this: http://www.gravedigger.com/photo/racerock/IMG_0157.jpg

...130 motor is powerfull enough to turn those tires and do some wheelies too.. just gear it properly, using worm gear provides low gear ratio, but quite hard to combine with other that may give you high speed, since you are using rear motor configuration, i would suggest for you to use the same gear set as on the Mini-Z Monster but this time use a bigger idler gear to lower the ratio powerfull enough to turn those tires fast enough to pop up some wheelie and could provide you enough torque to pull itself up on medium sized (compared to tire size) rocks.

MAN what a difference between the 130 and 280 motor!!!!!!!! Now the truck FLIES!!!   :D
HOLY S#$@!!!!! where do u get those? becuse i got the cheap micro sizer power brute and well that can't clime a 10 degre angle so where do u buy them! man there cool
word of advise dont get a fast car get a big truck and run over the fast one when parked just like that RC truck USE IT run over zip zaps or micro sizers!!!!

All the vehicles in TTTT FORUM are handbuilt and cost hundreds of dollars to complete.

filelicker is right!, most of the trucks featured here are handbuilt and cost $$$$, some don't even believe that the price of this things could go up to $300.oo (it depends on the parts that you already have on your misc. box) , not until they build one.

Nice job IsToR I think it turned out nicely now if you can only get a metal gear to keep the worm gear from eating it up...
