Well, I finally got my stage 2 motors, and it's cool they come with a heatsink, but that cast aluminum looks nasty. So I whipped out my dremel, polishing wheels, and red polishing compound, and shined that puppy up.

She shined up nicely, don't you think?

Toothpaste has mild abrasives, and is an effective polish. Now that you mention it, I might go over this with some toothpaste, to get the fine swirls out.

dude, thats awsome, how long did it take? you shuld really think about doing that at a price for some people... nothing more than 5-10 bucks but hey thats good money if you get enough people... nothing but profit, no supply costs

Probably about 5 bucks.

I could have called it done after 20-30 minutes, but I went off on it for an hour. I'm just like that.

So wait toothpaste works. wut else do u think works? Well I'm not sure what other household products work as a polish, but another option is to take some 400 grit sand paper and rub it in straight lines, going the same direction to give it a machined look. That's what I started out doing, and it looked nice, but I quickly decided I wanted something shinier.

Will any type of tooth paste work for polishing it (i.e. colgate, crest, aquafresh...etc.)?

Mine's already polished, so I can't experiment now, so someone try this for me. Go over it with steel wool first, then finish with the toothpaste. Let me know how that works. I'm curious.

Oh yeh, and I'd imagine any brand could work, but I assume you'd need a paste, and not a gel.

any paste will work. i learned this from polishing amber at spring fest(event at purdue(a university)). we used sand paper then steel wool then tooth paste and denum. works great for amber, but i dont know about metal. i finished mine by finally getting the dremal out and using the metal fiber disk(best i can describe it). the heat sink kinda looks like a very shiny brushed metal.

Well the toothpaste i had made it shiny but i busted out the dremal and i must say AWESOME i drive in the light with no body and sometimes it hits my eyes ITS LIKE LOOKING INTO THE SUN!

The wire wheel will get it that brushed look, I tried it on a small part, but if you want that polished look you gonna need the polishing wheels, and red polishing compoud. Sears sells a polishing kit that comes with polishing wheels, buffing wheels, a shaft, polishing compound, and I think there's a couple wire wheels in there too. I think it was something like 6 or 7 bucks. I dunno, got it a while ago. Time for a new one.

Yeah they have them being sold on Ebay for a little while now. They say they give better performance. What bull...

they do my motor runs ALOT cooler now

xmodsupra
11-27-2003, 10:38 PM
your motor would run cooler without the metal heatsink because more air will get to it. Its not like in a pc, its not stationary.

crazydave

That just silly. A polished heatsink just looks cool. It will not improve the performance of your car in any way what-so-ever over an un-polished one.

Come on guys, let's use a little common sense here.

SerialKillinSam

what if i put a little artic silver 3 to help the heat transfer? i know i really dont need it but it would help cooling if that means anything. oh yeah on computer heatsinks a polished/lapped heat sink does help transfer heat (makes a better conection) but i dont think you would knowtice it becuase the xmods motors dont generate the extreme temps a cpu would

{for those of you who dont know artic silver 3 is a thermal past used to help the heat transfer between computer processors and heat sinks}

Not too shabby. i did use the mother's mag polish and it really didn't do anything more than what the dremel polising compound already accomplished.

do u really wanna know my secret. i'm sorry you can't :( . but if u want urs all shiny let me know.

tavisjohn
12-07-2003, 10:11 PM
I want to do it myself. I have a dremel and the polishing stuff to go with it. Maybe I'll pick up some alunium from the local hoby shop and experiment with different methods of polishing. :)

xzipensco
12-07-2003, 10:39 PM
thats cool, gotta give ya props for tryin first. buuuut if ya want me ta get it done for ya let me know.

tavisjohn
12-07-2003, 10:49 PM
Practice makes perfect! The local hoby shop sells various sizes & thicknesses of aluminum plates, both polished and unpolished. So I'll get some unpollished aluminum and give it a go.

And I promise that if I figure it out, all I'll do is post a picture, I'll keep it a secret. (I may do it for others for $$ as well ;) )

i really doubt people are going to take the time to send you their heatsinks much less pay you to polish them when a dremel tool is a pretty readily available item. The whole point of a message board is to share information, not try to keep everything to yourself so you can try to make a few bucks. If it were something like a cf chassis then that's completely different. But this is just polishing metal.....cmon it's not that big of a deal.

xzipensco
12-08-2003, 07:37 AM
well i can tell u this much i didn't use a dremel, and look how shiny mine is. the stuff i use people might not want to pay for just to shine a heat sink. plus like i stated before, i can do custom engraving on it.

tavisjohn
12-08-2003, 09:17 AM
I'm not worried about custom etching, however I am sure that there are some people who would be. I have other materials that I can use too.

The problem with sharing all your secrets, is that you will no longer have anything unique. Besides if you just drop hints (Like in this thread) you are forced to come up with your own ideas on how to do it. Besides I like being given an idea and figuring my own way about it.

xzipensco
12-08-2003, 09:21 AM
like i said: i gotta give props to those that try it themselves. i'm offering my service as a last resort. so to those that try it or anything for that matter good luck :D

Worst case, if the polishing does not work, the brushed steel look is cool to!

Since you've been mentioning using all these spinbrush motors maybe you could save the spinbrush and put some toothpaste on it to swirl up the heatsink :P
Would that work though? Maybe...

I believe wal-mart sells a metal polishing paste still called MAAS. I used to use that stuff to polish all sorts of things. I even had a mirror finished masterlock at one time from messing around with that stuff. All I can tell you abou the grit is that it's so fine, i can't feel it by rubbing some of it between myfingers.

Either way, I'm planning on hunting down another tube of that stuff, and some sheet aluminum. I have ideas :D

I just polished mine up. Man this looks great now. I used some tooth paste and a used crest spin brush. This sure beatings polishing it by hand.
