I'm in the market for a new mini-car and I'm considering the BRP 18 thing....

Ok what sort of hop up parts are there? are there oceans of parts like with the MRS4? or is it a DIY god car?(thats ok if it is, tell the truth)

What sort of electronics are reqiured?

What bodies can you use, can you use HPI MRS4 bodies?

The pricing of this car is very alluring its cheap and RWD, but how is teh quality, I don't want a car thast going to fall apart when it gets slammed into by my bros MRS4(:p).

Also, I saw one member had a hpi wheel conversion, how is that done? is it a DIY mod ir a kit.

Lots of questions, but it seems no one really posts here which kinda is scary....

I own three SC18s, one for me to race and two for my kids (13 and 11) to race with me and with our club. They are quick, durable and handle great. There are a few drawbacks but fun for the money they are one of the best buys out there in my opinion.

For hop ups you can get the XP magnets for the motor which is sort of stock part.
The HPI Wheel inner hub adapters ($30).
Ball Differential ($20), a must have item in my opinion.
There is a more flexible T-plate that is less than $10.
Then various tires in regular and long wear foam. The wheels are very plain black rims with foam tires, made to perform, not look pretty. If you want pretty wheels buy the HPI wheel adapter kit. Any HPI Micro wheel designed to use the HPI inner wheel hub will fit on the adapter hubs.
The stock wheels in std foam are $10 each pair and the long wear I don't recall...a few dollars more...but worth it.
For electronics you can put standard size electronics for radio gear. You want a smaller ESC (Cyclone size or smaller).
If you go with the GTP Sport body or ARM bodies you will want to use a micro servo, Hitec HS-81MG is a good choice.
Make certain it is the MG Metal Gear model and use a servo saver regardless of what you use.
There are not oceans of parts but you don't need them. I'd rather spend my money on bodies and wheels and such rather than aluminum or graphite parts.
Out of the box and add a Ball Diff and it will kick Micro butt. Even HPI and Team Orion Modified motor equipped Micros.

The wide wheel setting and 150 mm bodies will work on the micro. I enlarged the wheel wells on the 140mm Dodge VIper by HPI and it looked OK. A couple of the RAD Microsports will fit nicely and the HPI Corvette, Stratus, and a few others will fit. Proline bodies are a little too tight in the nose. Naturally the BRP bodies will work. Bolink's bodies will fit.

The car's build quality is high. there is very little that will break on the car. Low cost and cheap are not the same thing. The car is low cost. Build quality on the car is high and product support is excellent.
There aren't a wealth of hopups because there is no need for them and BRP doesn't have the advertising budget available that HPI does. The advertisers drive the focus of the magazines and to some extent the articles drive the product life of a vehicle. Watch it, when the HPI MIcro stops receiving a lot of press it will be disconitinued a year or so after that...
Product development will stop and then the support will be determined by the quantity of backlog of parts on hand.

BRP has made 18th scale cars for several years. He had an Outlaw Oval before the SC18 and there is a FUN WONS variant of both.

The hpi wheel conversion is a kit that sells for $30. It is hand made kit, fabricated by the owner.

Most of the BRP discussions are on the Hobby Talk Mini RC Racers forum at:

http://www.hobbytalk.com/bbs1/forumdisplay.php?forumid=21&pagenumber=1&sortfield=lastpost&sortorder=desc&daysprune=60&x=8&y=8

Join the Hobby Talk forums and ask questions to your hearts content. Don't be surprised to have a rreplly from the owner of BRP, Bud Bartos. He sponsors that Hobby Talk section of the forum. He has driven the Micro and played with it. He is straight forward and honest about his car. Very little bias in my view.

Another point... The BRP SC18 is made in America.

Good luck with your decision.

Well, from the top:

Hop-ups:
Honestly, this car is so good out of the box that not many are needed, but there are hop-ups available. Get the ball diff for sure.

Electronics:
Same kind of spec as Micro RS4, e.g. Novak Spy and XXL would be a nice setup, but larger will fit.

Bodies:
CV5, SAL S-7, Stock Car, and truck are available. I'm not certain but Micro bodies should work, would have to verify width and length.

Quality:
Great - and the only time your bro's Micro will get a chance to slam into you is when you are lapping him! :D

Wheel Conversion:
BRP makes the kit:

If you're still not sure, just watch these vids!

Bud tried the SPY, it works pretty well but he had more punch with the Novak Atom.
He did a back to back comparison and the SPY didn't have the punch he would get with the ATOM and it showed in the acceleration.
Just have to be careful with the ATOM, no protection against reverse voltage hookups. An inexpensive good stock motor ESC lots of BRP SC18/Fun Wons drivers like is the Futaba MC230CR. A reversing small foot print stock motor capable ESC. Bud's advice is get something you can use when you decide in 5-10 years you want to go to a 10th scale car. He doesn't say 5-10...my wishful thinking on the life of the current micro mania.

TinyRC, I'm glad to see you are open minded and honest in your reporting. Many forums are very close minded...
Thanks for making it a friendly place.

No problem! You may not get the same response from our members at YourMicro.com, but we know the SC18 is a great little car, and a Micro killer!

WOW, these are some really nice answers! all my q's were answered AND then some.

It seems these BRP's are really nice.....Would it be fair to say that they are the bigger brother of the DTM SP?

As for getting this over the Mrs4 I may end up with both, I really love feeding the war between AWD ad RWD.....:o :D

Well guys I may have betrayed you, I got a micro rs4!:) ;)

Just seemed more practical, since my bro has one, wouldn't be fun if I got a BRP and always won when we raced;) :D

ITS CALLED (**Letting him win every once in a while to make him feel good about it**)

GRIN*:D :D :D

As for me.....can't wait to put the "hammer" to the RS4 (wagon riders)

LOL..........I have always been "different" and like the competition....2wd vs. 4wd. Seem underdogish? I can't wait to see.

The best thing to do is to buy both ;)
I've got a Micro Rs4, with the only hop-ups being softer tires and a heatsink moor plate. With 5 cells and soft tires, it is great on my painted basement floor. The SC-18 can hardly get around the slippery cramped track. Outside, the stock SC-18 kills the micro, with its higher speed, and taller ground clearance(I have the fun wons version), it is great on the pavement.

All:

I have over 10 BRP's that I let the general public abuse (er.. use) and I cannot say enough good about them.

Bud designed one heck of a car that is tough, fast and alot of fun. I picked up the little Kyosho, a Micro and the BRP to test them all and you cannot go wrong with the BRP.

Great car
