Have any of you other Mini-Zers tried installing an aftermarket turbo that we use on Mini-Z's into your Xmod?

There are many aftermarket turbos for Mini-Z's. Basically, you attach them to the batteries and the motor and they somehow bypass the stock ESC.

It will likely work just fine. The XMODS work on the same principles as Mini-zs.

Oh, a "turbo" is actually an external motor controller, it has nothing to do with forced induction.:p

dont you lose reverse/brake with most turbos?

Only some, the $30 "twin turbo" can be found at tower, and it has forward, reverse, and brake.

What kind of gains would a turbo give? more torque, top speed? Is it worth the $30?

Yes, it would fit.

The turbo is worth it if you want to run a highly modified motor like those sold at minizracer.com. It will give more tourqe with normal motors due to less resistance and higher current limits. The speed may increase due to the low resistance as well.
