View Full Version : 7.2 V X-MOD, Quick and fairly easy!

I just recently got my White Supra Xmod from RS and It's loads of fun and pretty fast stock, but I soon started to feel the urge for more speed. I haven't had a chance to go to my local RS yet, so today, since I had a blackout, I decided to hook up two extra AAAs to my Xmod and see how it would come out. I attatched one cell to each of the top cells on either side of the car and held the extra batteries on the car with a rubber band around the car to hold the batteries on and got to driving the car. With the extra 2.4 V the car really flew, even though the car is bone stock and I'm not the type of person that would over exagerate (if thats how you spell it) speed since I'm used to the speed my gas powered off road RC truck (around 55-60MPH). However the body does not fit completely on the chassis with the extra cells so probably tomorrow im going to go to RS and buy some AAAAs to try out and see if they allow the body to be mounted (didn't even know AAAAs existed until recently :D ) If anyone is realy interested, I can go into detail on how to do this mod. It's really simple and pretty easy and is definitely worth trying.

I didn't know you could get aaaa's from RS.
I was wondering if they could take 7.2 volts. I haven't got my Xmod yet but I was wondering if they could take 7.2 because I was thinking about using 2 Li-Poly cells. That would give 7.2 volts.
You have to have a special charger to charge Li cells but I have the charger already. I don't have the cells yet though.

That sounds good. How much do Li-Poly cells cost and how big are they? Do they last a long time? I have personally never heard of them:o

Li polys are rather expensive, but that is not an issue. About $15-30 depending on size. Be careful! They burst into flames when shorted!

Li-Poly cells last much much longer but they ARE DANGEROUS if you don't know how to use them. They are not as dangerous as Li-Ion but you have to be careful. They have to be charged in a special way or they can explode and can start a fire.

Those look pretty cool, and also pretty effective. Although I think I'm just gonna stick with Alkakline or NiMH. With the 7.2 V mod I did it is already faster than I need it to be and it only has the stock motor in it. were you thinking of adding the two 4 V cells or the smaller voltage cells? if you are going to add the two 4 V, then I suggest you try the 7.2 V mod first since mine is already faster than you could ever need in a race (unless your going for pure top speed  ).

Go to the shack and get 2 battery holders that will hold 3 AAA batts then remove the stock 2fer holders and attach the new ones and complete the wiring and mill the body out slightly and you are done. I will take pictures tonight

What I was thinking was run time. Not top speed. I've seen little about run time. Seems to be 10 to 20 nimutes. With Li-Poly cells, run time could be increased to over a hour without having to recharge. Another thing is the car wouldn't be as heavy.
I might just be thinking AIRPLANE WAY when I don't need too. Just Wondering.

hmmm...they do make a 7.2 rechargable R/C battery, it it make you car go faster and run longer, hey, id spend the 34 bucks

That battery pack is larger than the entire XMods car...

so how did you attatch the 2 extra cells to the existing ones? did you kinda do it like you would for a dual cell with a zz (i would guess some way like the zz site tells you to so that you dont solder the batteries together and you can take them off to recharge them)
Chris
10-28-2003, 07:59 PM
Yeah, its pretty much like a dual cell mod on a bit-char. I included a diagram (it isn't very neat:rolleyes: ) that should help. Just follow the diagram and use a rubber band to hold the wires to the new cell. Use a rubber band or two around the car to hold the batteries onto the chassis. If there is any trouble understanding my diagram or anything, let me know.

lol nice picture....but for more speed why dont you just buy awd and stage 2?
Chris
10-29-2003, 09:31 AM
Well, I heard AWD lowers top speed and rn time so I don't think I'm going to do that, as for the stage 2, I'm planning on getting it soon but I haven't had a chance to get to RS yet and since I had a blackout on monday I decided to try the extra cell mod.

amagine the stage 2 with that mod

I did just this. I went full mod and the yellow stage 2 gear set. Stiff shocks in the back, medium in the front. I haven't changed the tyres yet. They will be soft treads in back and hard treads in front. In the mean time this rocks. BAE

one can find room to put one or two cells on the rear bumper if one made a plug to disconect the body from the chassis

I like thi xmod car thier pretty cool. Im myself a miniz Mr02 owner. :) . Im pretty sure you could burn out the electronics on a mini-z if you put 7.2 volts through it. wont the 7.2 v Mod on the X-mod fry the electronics ? Dude because if its not im running to one of those xmod AWD Cars !! :) You could probably beat some micro rs4 with that thing !

good news, but bad news
i ran over to my local RS and got a 2 aaa bater holder, so i got home, hooked it up, faster than it ever was before
but (theres a but)
it cant go in reverse
so im pretty sure the extra volts disable the ecs on it
too bad it seems like a good mod for it
Chris
10-30-2003, 05:29 PM
Are you sure? I have the same set up (two extra cells) and the car still has reverse and everything. No fried electronics, either. and about beating a micro RS4, there's no way:D . I have a micro RS4 with a pan chassis and a 380 motor , 7.2 V battery pack, and the thing is ridiculously fast. but it might be able to beat a stock micro RS4 if thats what you were talking about......

where did you mount it? i want to do this but cant find room under the stock skyline
Chris
10-30-2003, 07:19 PM
It doesn't fit under the body. I think someone else said you can get a AAA holder that holds 3 AAAs and it fits under the body with a little trimming of the body (with a dremel tool I guess) but otherwise they don't really fit under the body

im not understanding the picture. were does the red wire run to? do you just hook up the black wire to the battery? then to the spring in the tray?
also i have the skyline with the stage 2 motor with the blue gear, just wondering if this mod is gonna blow my sh*t up?

just wondering if this would work? and were would i hook up the 2 wires?
Chris
10-30-2003, 09:19 PM
That should work, and even if it doen't, it's only $1.49:D . I don't really see and reason for the extra cells to blow anything up (although the extra voltage is possibly dangerous to the esc, I haven't had any problems at all) and the red wire is attatched to the contact where the negative side of the battery would normally touch (its a little spring). The electrical tape shown is to block the current between the negative side of the battery and the red wire.

now were does the red wire coming from the battery holder hook up to?
Chris
10-31-2003, 03:30 PM
it hooks up to the negative side of the extra cell

hey i got a question about the batteries
is a 3.8v battery with 600mah that is recharable good?
would two of them would work in an xmod without fring anything?
Chris
10-31-2003, 07:15 PM
Yeah, that should work. What kind of batteries are they?

A pair of those in a AA holder would be 7.2, and you could just use them to replace all 4 AAA's and still get the extra performance. Even better, being lithium, they weigh about the same as a standard AAA and less than rechargeables!
And to top it all off, you get more life out of them to boot (though they are not rechargeable)... 700mAh per AAA rechargeable (1000 for a standard), these crank out an impressive 2100mAh!
Also: Rechargeable NiMH 9V batteries actually put out 7.2V... (6 cells x 1.2) less life, but the same kick and rechargeable!
