View Full Version : Thinking about doing some mods to a SE.
Bad Company
09-05-2003, 06:07 PM
Actually, I was thinking about removing the light system from one of the SE bodies and transplanting them into another like the new Camaro or something. Also, I was thinking about possibly trying a Laymans 4 cell since the original battery is longer, if it will fit. I've got some questions for the more tech minded people out there. How do you think the extra voltage will effect the motorized steering? Will it be too much for the PCB? I know not much is known yet about these yet, but I don't want to be the first to blow his up! Any ideas?
And yes...for those who know me, I am looking into a wheel mod. It appears to be fairly simple. You remove one screw on the bracket above the knuckles and they look like they will just lift out.

for a wheel mod go with some modifier rims
Bad Company
09-05-2003, 08:56 PM
I have done the Modifiers wheel mod on one of my regular Zips and while they look really good, they don't do to well for performance. I'm going to go with something a little more solid like the KIT Racer wheels. They are probably one of the best wheel mods that don't sacrifice performance IMO.

There is some type of coating painted over the PCB. This will make mods a little bit harder now.
Yugo DSC Maxxer
09-06-2003, 02:35 PM
A coating?!?
Ok.....RadioShack really doesnt want us modding one...So now I don't want to get one!
Bad Company
09-06-2003, 02:58 PM
Yeah, the top of the PCB board has some kind of coating, but the bottom doesn't. Maybe it's just for appearance, or maybe to prevent interfearence.
Yugo DSC Maxxer
09-06-2003, 03:07 PM
Oh.....but what does bottom on the bottom mean?
Would that coating prevent certain mods?
Thanks.

SE in disguise....
I think I might use this body, transplant the lights over to it, and cut a T-Top in. I kinda like the existing Savanna wheels on the Camaro, looks like the rally style wheels the real ones have. What do you think?

jus curious, do the stock tires fit better on teh wheels now or is it still half a mm too narrow? this is y i prefer bitcharg tires, they fit nicer on the wheels
Bad Company

The tires fit exactly the same. The only thing I noticed so far is that the Savanna hubcaps are a little tighter fit on the regular Zip rear axles.

This is probably more of a Mod for the next generation of ZZSE, Something I'd DEFINATELY like to see adjusted (or better yet adjustable) is the controller steering "play".
What I mean by that is the wheel, on the controller, travels 45° and -45° from neutral...BUT to go from Straight to FULL turn is only like +/- 20°. That's just too tight for my taste.
Here's a diagram to better show what I mean. The Black arrow represents Neutral. From Black to either Green arrows is how much the wheel travels...From Black to either Blue arrows though is about how much the full range of propo steering there is (quite tight).
Bad Company
09-07-2003, 12:51 PM
Namuna, you wanna be the first to tear apart his controller and see how one might adjust that? :D
You are correct, I have noticed that it doesn't appear to be using the full range of the wheel.
Namuna
09-07-2003, 07:08 PM
Well, apparently the 4 screws in the controller isn't the only thing holding it together.
Gonna have to fidget with it some more to figure out how to rip it apart.

I made these skirts thicker because I'm not going to be able to lower the body enough and still keep the lights installed. I don't want to go thru the hassle of rewiring the lights PCB to the rear of the car.

hey, about the controller "problem", I don't think it will be easy to fix, because I have a larger r/c with a three step steering, and to adjust the position would require making a new pcb in the controller. I don't have an SE yet because I'm too cheap to pay shipping.

would it be possible to solder the wires that connect to the lcd pcb to a batt and then you would have a dual cell, but it would be external...do you get what i mean???
BabyKiller
09-09-2003, 09:03 PM
why not wire up a switch to swich in between leds and a mA boost to the motor? run the 2 power wires to the motor from the led plug and wire it parrel to the existing connections in turn will create more mA which creates more torque which give the motor the strengnth to turn the gears to turn at a higher rpm
i found a flaw in this in order to do this mod and still be able to switch back to leds you cant solder tothe existing plug im gusseing you might need to make your own plug or get through the coating and solder on the +/- points with a on off switch

I think what is actually holding it together is the steering wheel might be connected to the backside of the controller cover. I tried to remove the wheel, but it didn't act like it wanted to come off without something cracking or breaking. Gonna wait till I get a couple more controllers before I tear one apart.

OK, It wouldn't let me edit the last photo, but anyways...
I trimmed the skirts down and added to the spoiler. I just need to fill in the cracks with putty. Next step.....tab lower that SE chassis.
Bad Company
09-11-2003, 01:28 PM
Here is a pic of the body on the chassis lowered. There is not much lowering capablitlies on the SE chassis, with or without the lights PCB board in the body. The main problem is that bigh ole black box on top of the chassis PCB.
Bad Company
09-11-2003, 01:30 PM
Here is a comparison with a normal SE chassis. The SE chassis still has the lights PCB, so without that, it could be a tad lower.

I don't mind if use it at all, it's not trademarked.....yet. ;) I used styrene sheets and stacked and glued them together. You can use either (3) 20mm sheets or (2) 30mm sheets to obtain the same thickness I have or make you own thickness. I traced the pattern around the body, and did the same for the spoiler, but made that a little larger. I make everything a little big and then sand it down after it is glued to the car.

ron6, this is the best I can do on my home computer. No Auto Cad here. Theis will give the basic dimensions and you just have to shape it to the contour of the body. Mount the side skirts flush to the inside of the body and mount the front and rear to have the same outside overhang as the side skirts.

You can find styrene at you local hobby shop. Now, if I made them for you, that would take all the fun out of it, and the feeling of accomplishment you your part. It's really not hard.
airline2:
The car is more lowered in the front than the rear because of the black box on the PCB, and the skirts do give it more of a lowered look, but it is lowered and makes the profile look a lot better than the original which had the body leaning towards the rear.
It will get dropped more once I remove the lights and figure out what that box is and if anything can be done with it.
BTW, I stuck some better photos in the Gallery Forum.

Actually, I am in the process of doing it on this one. I removed the existing tabs already, but I haven't mounted new tabs. (It's just sitting on the chassis and held on because the skirts make a tight fit.) I am going to remove the light system so I can lower it more, and then I will mount the new tabs at that point. The light system is going in another body.
Bad Company
09-12-2003, 01:10 PM
I have removed the light system successfully. There are some little tabs that have to be cut under the body. I removed those to get maximum lowering capability. The lights were real easy to remove too. The really just popped off with a little prying with a small screwdriver.

Here is the body lowered as far as it can go. I removed the front lights and will fill it in. I'm thinking about added a little to the sides of the spoiler to make it overhang a little.

I actually haven't done the complete tab lowering yet. All I have done is remove the existing tabs. It's such a tight fit, the body actually stays in place with out any tabs. I will add some, but they will have to be really small, something like 1/32". You can see here how tight of a fit it is when you push the chassis up in the body (even without the existing tabs).

I actually thought about doing that exact same thing with the existing LED's I removed, but I want to stick them in another body. It may be something I do in the future though.
You will have to move the LED PCB to the rear of the car above the motor and add some wire to the front LED's. You also may not be able to lower the Savanna body as low because the plug for the lights sits right in the front windshield.

I use the 3.4 motor from my Nascar Motorworks (aka ZZ NX) and it goes plenty faster than a 4.2, but in a MS its a different story. Also, I did not get any "lack of torque", on the contrary, the 3.4 beat my friends brand new MotorWorks in a "torque test" (the cars are put nose to nose and you see which car pushes the other to find which has more torque). The only mod I find nessesary is a body kit.

What is the deal with the controller?
Why have they switched they left/right to the left!
Does anyone know if you could get these in NZ? How much do they cost!?

I haven't been able to do anything here because of the hurricane. I will hopefully get back on this weekend.

You can use this, but you will have to make adjustments for the new front tab. I haven't had a chance to correct the tutorial for the new SE front tab.
